A Rich Historical Journey

This land has been the traditional territory of the Syilx People of the Okanagan Nation for thousands of years. Nestled between forested mountains and the northern tip of the Sonoran Desert, Oliver’s diverse habitats support unique species not found elsewhere in Canada.

The first European settlement was Fairview, a boom and bust mining town successful in the 1890s but a ghost town by the 1920s. In 1921, Oliver was founded through the BC government’s South Okanagan Land Project, transforming desert land into fertile farmland. Today, Oliver is the “Wine Capital of Canada,” with a thriving viticulture industry.
