Acknowledging Syilx Territory
Osoyoos Indian Band (OIB)
We respectfully and with gratitude acknowledge the unceded traditional territory of the Okanagan (Syilx) People and the traditional keepers of their land. We want to say thank you for allowing us to live, work, and play on your lands.
way’
(pronounced wai) means hello in our Okanagan language
nsyilxcən is the unique language spoken by the Syilx Okanagan people, part of the Salish language family. This language distinguishes the Syilx from other indigenous groups, with varying dialects across their territory.
Despite the severe impact of colonization and residential schools on language retention, the Okanagan Nation Alliance is dedicated to revitalizing nsyilxcən. Community-based strategies, including immersion schools, language nests, and web-based tools, are essential to preserving this vital part of their culture.
